Your vehicle’s braking system is one of its most important safety systems. Whether you are commuting around town, travelling on the highway or dealing with Tasmania’s changing road conditions, properly maintained brakes help you slow down and stop safely when you need them.

Knowing the warning signs of brake problems can help you address wear or faults before they develop into more expensive repairs. A spongy or soft brake pedal, brake pedal pulsation, squeaking, grinding or a brake warning light on the dashboard should all be treated as reasons to have your braking system inspected.

Brake components naturally wear through normal driving, but the rate of wear can vary depending on your vehicle, driving conditions and how often you use the brakes. Some common signs include:

What Are the Signs Your Brakes Need Attention?

Squealing or squeaking: May indicate worn brake pads or other brake component issues.

Grinding: Can occur when brake pads have worn excessively and should be investigated promptly.

A spongy brake pedal: May indicate air or moisture in the brake fluid, a hydraulic issue or another fault requiring inspection.

Pulsation or vibration: A brake pedal or steering wheel that vibrates during braking can be associated with uneven brake rotor wear or other problems.

Pulling when braking: May indicate uneven braking performance, a sticking caliper or another issue.

Brake warning light: Should never be ignored, as it can indicate a problem within the braking system.

If you notice a change in how your vehicle brakes, Launnie Automotive can inspect the system and identify whether maintenance, replacement parts or further repairs are required.

Brake maintenance is about more than replacing brake pads when they become worn. A professional inspection can assess the condition of the brake pads, rotors, calipers, brake fluid and other components that contribute to safe and consistent braking.

Brake fluid also requires attention. Over time, it can absorb moisture, which can affect braking performance and contribute to corrosion within the hydraulic system. Brake fluid should be checked and replaced according to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations or when testing indicates it is required.

At Launnie Automotive, our brake services include brake pad replacement, brake rotor resurfacing and replacement, brake fluid flushes and replacement, brake caliper servicing and brake inspections. Our technicians can assess the braking system and recommend the appropriate work based on the vehicle's condition rather than replacing components unnecessarily.

As a Repco Authorised Service centre, Launnie Automotive also provides a Nationwide Warranty covering eligible services for up to 12 months or 20,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first, providing additional peace of mind when you have your vehicle serviced at our workshop.

Brake Maintenance: Keeping Your Brakes Safe and Responsive

A Honda Civic was recently brought into Launnie Automotive in Invermay with the engine warning light illuminated on the dashboard. While the vehicle was still running, the owner was concerned about the warning light and wanted to have the problem diagnosed before it developed into a more serious and potentially expensive repair.

Like many vehicles driven around Invermay, this Honda Civic is used for regular commuting and day-to-day driving. Modern engines rely on a range of electronically controlled components to operate efficiently, and when a warning light appears, it is important to have the issue investigated promptly.

As part of our engine light diagnosis process, the experienced technicians at Launnie Automotive connected advanced diagnostic scan equipment to the vehicle's onboard computer system. The scan revealed a fault code indicating that the rocker arm actuator was stuck in the OFF position.

Further inspection of the actuator found that it had become restricted by a build-up of oil sludge. The rocker arm actuator plays an important role in controlling valve operation and engine performance. When sludge accumulates inside the engine, it can interfere with the movement of critical components and trigger fault codes and warning lights.

As shown in the inspection photo, sludge contamination had affected the actuator's ability to operate correctly. If left unresolved, this condition could have led to reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption and potential long-term engine wear.

To rectify the fault, our technicians carefully removed the rocker arm actuator and cleaned the affected components to remove the sludge build-up. Once the actuator was free to operate correctly again, the system was reassembled and tested.

After completing the repair, the fault code was cleared and the engine management system was retested to confirm correct operation. The engine warning light remained off, and the actuator was functioning as intended.

This repair highlights the importance of regular engine oil and filter servicing. Fresh, high-quality engine oil helps prevent sludge formation and ensures vital engine components remain properly lubricated and operational.

As an independently owned Repco Authorised Service centre, Launnie Automotive has access to quality parts, advanced diagnostic equipment, expert technicians and the backing of a nationwide warranty. This successful Honda Civic engine light repair demonstrates the team's ability to accurately diagnose and resolve complex engine management faults for local motorists in Invermay.

If your Honda Civic or any other vehicle has an engine warning light illuminated, don't ignore it. Early diagnosis can help prevent more extensive repairs and keep your vehicle running safely, reliably and efficiently.

Automotive Servicing and Repairs in Invermay

In the colder climes of Launceston, Tasmania, where temperatures can dive low enough to make anyone reach for an extra layer, your car's comfort and performance rely significantly on one crucial component: the cooling system. Whilst the name might suggest its primary role is to keep things cool, the cooling system (including the radiator) is pivotal in maintaining an optimal operating temperature for your vehicle's engine, even in the frosty weather Launceston is known for. Let's dive into the essence of radiators and cooling systems, shedding light on why their maintenance is non-negotiable for every motorist in our beautiful city.

At its core, the cooling system performs a balancing act. It keeps the engine from overheating by dissipating heat in warm conditions and ensures the engine warms up quickly and stays at an optimal temperature in cold environments. This system comprises several key components, including the radiator, thermostat, water pump, cooling fan, and coolant, all working in harmony.

The Heart of the Matter: Radiators and Cooling Systems Explained

The radiator, which is perhaps the most recognised part of the cooling system, acts as the heat exchanger. It cools the coolant mixture after it has absorbed heat from the engine and before it circulates back to draw more heat away. This cycle is critical in both preventing overheating in hot weather and ensuring the engine reaches and maintains the right temperature to operate efficiently in colder weather.

The varied temperatures in Invermay, Launceston, Tasmania, highlight the need for a diligently maintained cooling system. Here are several reasons why:

Why a Well-Maintained Cooling System is Critical in Launceston

1. Preventing Freeze-ups: In cold temperatures, an inadequately maintained cooling system can lead to the coolant freezing, causing blockages and potentially severe engine damage.

2. Optimal Engine Performance: A well-maintained cooling system ensures the engine quickly reaches its most efficient operating temperature, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions—crucial for those frosty Launceston mornings.

3. Longevity of Your Vehicle: Regular maintenance of the cooling system prevents the buildup of rust and corrosion, ensuring the longevity of the engine and, by extension, your vehicle.

At Launnie Automotive, your trusted mechanic in Invermay, we can't stress enough the importance of regular checks and maintenance for your cooling system, especially given the unique climate of Launceston. Here are some maintenance tips:

Maintenance Tips for Your Vehicle's Cooling System

1. Regular Coolant Changes: Ensure your coolant is changed as recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer. This not only keeps the coolant effective but also reduces the risk of corrosion.

2. Thermostat Checks: A malfunctioning thermostat can wreak havoc on your engine's ability to regulate temperature. Regular checks can prevent this issue.

3. Radiator Inspections: Check your radiator and hoses for leaks or damages periodically. Any compromise can lead to decreased efficiency of your cooling system.

At Launnie Automotive, we understand the nuances of maintaining vehicles in the variable Tasmanian weather. We take pride in offering the very best in car servicing and automotive repairs, including comprehensive cooling system checks and maintenance to ensure your car is prepared to face the winter chill or those unexpected high temperatures.

Understanding the Importance of Radiators and Cooling Systems

Drive belt hydraulic tensioners are critical components of modern vehicles, ensuring smooth operation of essential engine systems. Understanding their role, recognising the warning signs of failure, and addressing issues promptly can save you from unexpected breakdowns. At Launnie Automotive in Invermay, we specialise in diagnosing and repairing drive belt hydraulic tensioner issues among other mechanical issues to keep your vehicle running smoothly.

A drive belt hydraulic tensioner is a vital part of your car’s engine system, designed to maintain the correct tension in the drive belt. The drive belt powers several key components, including the alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. The hydraulic tensioner ensures that the belt operates smoothly and efficiently by automatically adjusting tension to compensate for wear and engine vibrations. Without this component functioning correctly, your vehicle’s performance and reliability could be compromised.

What is a Drive Belt Hydraulic Tensioner?

Recognising the early signs of a failing drive belt hydraulic tensioner is essential to avoid costly repairs or breakdowns. Here are some common warning signs to watch out for:

Signs of Drive Belt Hydraulic Tensioner Failure

Squeaking or chirping noises coming from the engine.

Visible wear or cracks on the drive belt.

Difficulty steering or inconsistent power delivery.

Overheating caused by reduced alternator or water pump function.

Unusual vibrations or a loose drive belt.

If you notice any of these issues, it’s important to have your vehicle inspected by the experts at Launnie Automotive in Invermay to prevent further damage.

When a drive belt hydraulic tensioner fails, it can lead to several serious problems. A slack or misaligned drive belt may lose its grip, causing the engine’s vital systems to stop functioning properly. This could result in a loss of power steering, electrical system failure, or even engine overheating due to reduced cooling efficiency. In severe cases, the drive belt may snap entirely, leaving you stranded with a breakdown. If you suspect an issue, it’s important to address it immediately with professional assistance.

What Happens When a Drive Belt Hydraulic Tensioner Fails?

At Launnie Automotive in Invermay, we recently serviced a Honda Accord experiencing issues due to a failing drive belt hydraulic tensioner. The owner reported a squeaking noise and difficulty steering. Upon inspection, we identified a worn tensioner and replaced it with a high-quality component, ensuring the vehicle’s systems operated correctly. The repair was completed promptly, restoring the Honda Accord to peak performance and giving the owner peace of mind.
