Your vehicle’s braking system is one of its most important safety systems. Whether you are commuting around town, travelling on the highway or dealing with Tasmania’s changing road conditions, properly maintained brakes help you slow down and stop safely when you need them.

Knowing the warning signs of brake problems can help you address wear or faults before they develop into more expensive repairs. A spongy or soft brake pedal, brake pedal pulsation, squeaking, grinding or a brake warning light on the dashboard should all be treated as reasons to have your braking system inspected.

Brake components naturally wear through normal driving, but the rate of wear can vary depending on your vehicle, driving conditions and how often you use the brakes. Some common signs include:

What Are the Signs Your Brakes Need Attention?

Squealing or squeaking: May indicate worn brake pads or other brake component issues.

Grinding: Can occur when brake pads have worn excessively and should be investigated promptly.

A spongy brake pedal: May indicate air or moisture in the brake fluid, a hydraulic issue or another fault requiring inspection.

Pulsation or vibration: A brake pedal or steering wheel that vibrates during braking can be associated with uneven brake rotor wear or other problems.

Pulling when braking: May indicate uneven braking performance, a sticking caliper or another issue.

Brake warning light: Should never be ignored, as it can indicate a problem within the braking system.

If you notice a change in how your vehicle brakes, Launnie Automotive can inspect the system and identify whether maintenance, replacement parts or further repairs are required.

Brake maintenance is about more than replacing brake pads when they become worn. A professional inspection can assess the condition of the brake pads, rotors, calipers, brake fluid and other components that contribute to safe and consistent braking.

Brake fluid also requires attention. Over time, it can absorb moisture, which can affect braking performance and contribute to corrosion within the hydraulic system. Brake fluid should be checked and replaced according to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations or when testing indicates it is required.

At Launnie Automotive, our brake services include brake pad replacement, brake rotor resurfacing and replacement, brake fluid flushes and replacement, brake caliper servicing and brake inspections. Our technicians can assess the braking system and recommend the appropriate work based on the vehicle's condition rather than replacing components unnecessarily.

As a Repco Authorised Service centre, Launnie Automotive also provides a Nationwide Warranty covering eligible services for up to 12 months or 20,000 kilometres, whichever occurs first, providing additional peace of mind when you have your vehicle serviced at our workshop.

Why Is Regular Brake Maintenance Important?

Don't wait for a brake problem to become a safety concern. If your brakes are making unusual noises, the pedal feels different or you simply want peace of mind about their condition, contact Launnie Automotive for a professional brake inspection and service in Invermay.

Keeping your braking system properly maintained helps you and your passengers stay safer on the road.

Automotive Servicing and Repairs in Invermay

In the colder climes of Launceston, Tasmania, where temperatures can dive low enough to make anyone reach for an extra layer, your car's comfort and performance rely significantly on one crucial component: the cooling system. Whilst the name might suggest its primary role is to keep things cool, the cooling system (including the radiator) is pivotal in maintaining an optimal operating temperature for your vehicle's engine, even in the frosty weather Launceston is known for. Let's dive into the essence of radiators and cooling systems, shedding light on why their maintenance is non-negotiable for every motorist in our beautiful city.

At its core, the cooling system performs a balancing act. It keeps the engine from overheating by dissipating heat in warm conditions and ensures the engine warms up quickly and stays at an optimal temperature in cold environments. This system comprises several key components, including the radiator, thermostat, water pump, cooling fan, and coolant, all working in harmony.

The Heart of the Matter: Radiators and Cooling Systems Explained

The radiator, which is perhaps the most recognised part of the cooling system, acts as the heat exchanger. It cools the coolant mixture after it has absorbed heat from the engine and before it circulates back to draw more heat away. This cycle is critical in both preventing overheating in hot weather and ensuring the engine reaches and maintains the right temperature to operate efficiently in colder weather.

The varied temperatures in Invermay, Launceston, Tasmania, highlight the need for a diligently maintained cooling system. Here are several reasons why:

Why a Well-Maintained Cooling System is Critical in Launceston

1. Preventing Freeze-ups: In cold temperatures, an inadequately maintained cooling system can lead to the coolant freezing, causing blockages and potentially severe engine damage.

2. Optimal Engine Performance: A well-maintained cooling system ensures the engine quickly reaches its most efficient operating temperature, improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions—crucial for those frosty Launceston mornings.

3. Longevity of Your Vehicle: Regular maintenance of the cooling system prevents the buildup of rust and corrosion, ensuring the longevity of the engine and, by extension, your vehicle.

At Launnie Automotive, your trusted mechanic in Invermay, we can't stress enough the importance of regular checks and maintenance for your cooling system, especially given the unique climate of Launceston. Here are some maintenance tips:

Maintenance Tips for Your Vehicle's Cooling System

1. Regular Coolant Changes: Ensure your coolant is changed as recommended by your vehicle's manufacturer. This not only keeps the coolant effective but also reduces the risk of corrosion.

2. Thermostat Checks: A malfunctioning thermostat can wreak havoc on your engine's ability to regulate temperature. Regular checks can prevent this issue.

3. Radiator Inspections: Check your radiator and hoses for leaks or damages periodically. Any compromise can lead to decreased efficiency of your cooling system.

At Launnie Automotive, we understand the nuances of maintaining vehicles in the variable Tasmanian weather. We take pride in offering the very best in car servicing and automotive repairs, including comprehensive cooling system checks and maintenance to ensure your car is prepared to face the winter chill or those unexpected high temperatures.

Understanding the Importance of Radiators and Cooling Systems

Do you feel every bump in the road? Does your car struggle to grip the road properly? Your shock absorbers be worn! Don’t take the risk—bring your vehicle to Launnie Automotive in Invermay for an expert assessment.

Shock absorbers are one of the most misunderstood yet critical components of your vehicle. Many drivers don’t realise their primary job is to keep your tyres in firm contact with the road, ensuring both safety and performance.

Shock absorbers, along with struts, are vital parts of your car’s suspension system. They directly affect your vehicle's steering, stability, handling, braking and ride comfort. Replacing worn or faulty shocks and struts, as well as inspecting the overall suspension system, helps maintain control, safety, and a smoother driving experience.

A lesser-known fact is that shock absorbers also play a key role in reducing wear on other vehicle components, such as tyres, by minimising the vibration and stress that uneven roads place on the car.

If you notice concerning signs of shock absorber wear, don’t wait. Visit the team at Launnie Automotive in Invermay. Our qualified technicians can conduct a road test and provide professional advice. Below are some of the warning signs to watch for:

Trouble stopping Worn shock absorbers can increase your stopping distance by up to 20%, which could be life-threatening. Addressing this issue immediately is crucial.

Nose-diving and swerving Does the front of your car dip down when braking, or does the vehicle swerve when you slow down? These are classic signs of shock absorber problems.

Steering wheel vibrations If your steering wheel vibrates excessively, even on relatively smooth roads, it could point to faulty shock absorbers.

Drifting in side winds If your car veers or drifts in mild side winds, it’s a strong indicator that your shock absorbers may not be functioning correctly.

Excessive bouncing and rolling Is your car bouncing excessively over bumps, railway tracks, or uneven surfaces? Or does it feel unsteady around corners? It might be time for a suspension check-up at Launnie Automotive.

Uneven tyre wear Uneven or patchy tyre wear, especially bald spots, is often a sign of worn shock absorbers. This issue can reduce your tyres’ lifespan and compromise road safety.

At Launnie Automotive, we’re proud members of the Monroe Safety Specialist Program. This means our team is fully trained and committed to providing you with the right shock absorber solution tailored to your vehicle, driving habits, and individual needs. Dangers of Worn Shock Absorbers in Invermay

When it comes to keeping your vehicle in top condition, one component you simply cannot ignore is the timing belt. At Launnie Automotive in Invermay, we understand just how critical this often-overlooked part is to your engine's health. Let’s delve into why maintaining your timing belt is essential and how Launnie Automotive ensures your vehicle remains in peak performance.

Your timing belt is crucial in synchronising the movement of the engine’s camshaft and crankshaft. This ensures that the valves and pistons operate in perfect harmony, avoiding any collisions that could cause serious damage. Think of it as the maestro conducting the orchestra under your bonnet, ensuring everything plays in time. Without it, your engine's performance could falter, leading to significant issues.

Manufacturers typically recommend replacing your timing belt every 90,000 to 100,000 kilometres, but it's always wise to check your vehicle's manual for specific guidance. At Launnie Automotive, we advise combining your timing belt replacement with a new water pump installation. This preventive measure saves time and potential future labour costs, ensuring your vehicle runs smoothly for longer.

Ignoring timing belt maintenance can lead to severe consequences:

Severe Engine Damage: A broken timing belt can cause pistons and valves to collide, leading to costly and extensive repairs.

Complete Breakdown: A snapped belt will leave your vehicle inoperative, potentially leaving you stranded.

Expensive Repairs: The cost of replacing a timing belt is significantly less than repairing the damage caused by a failure.

At Launnie Automotive, our skilled technicians are dedicated to helping you avoid these pitfalls. We provide thorough inspections and timely replacements, ensuring your vehicle's longevity and reliability.

The photos featured in this article showcase a worn timing belt on a vehicle in our workshop that requires replacement.
